For several months in a row, news, life hacks, and insights on ChatGPT have been flooding news feeds, social networks, and chat platforms like Reddit and Quora. The neural network breaks all records of popularity: according to Business of Apps, ChatGPT gathered 100 million active users in the two first months of work. But is this AI tool as perfect as they say?

Let’s turn over every stone and talk about the problems it may cause to your business.

What is GPT and Why is it popular

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that automatically generates content. We are dealing with a previously educated neural network that uses natural language processing (NLP). It uses manuals, websites, and various articles to model its own language,

ChatGPT was established on November 30th, 2022, and immediately sparked interest among Internet users. Microsoft found the instrument by Open AI prominent and invested $10 billion, thus gaining 46% of the company’s assets. There was no chance for the engagement of such a major market player to go unnoticed.

Adam Conner, the vice president for Technology Policy at American Progress, attributes the rapid popularity of ChatGPT to the fact that it is one of the first artificial intelligence technologies of its kind to be available and understood by the public.

In short, the technology impresses with its innovativeness and, at the same time, its ease of use. Everyone wants to ask AI a question and get a detailed answer in a few seconds.

But does it work so easily for business, or does it work at all?

Why is ChatGPT attractive for business

The reason businesses paid attention to ChatGPT lies in its ability to simplify routine tasks, such as creating a content plan, generating post ideas, preparing job candidate requirements, and more. However, such processes still must be controlled to avoid unreliable information.

There is another side of the neural network owners that has caught the attention of business owners. With the emergence of ChatGPT, ideas have spread that the tool can replace many employees, such as copywriters, SMM specialists, translators, customer support staff, and many others. Moreover, not just replace them, but also work several times faster. And this already promises significant cost savings for business owners. Who wouldn’t like such a thing? However, being focused on cost savings and speed of work, many forget to mention the quality.

ChatGPT problem issues they will not tell you about

The popularity and enthusiasm surrounding ChatGPT are quite justified if we are talking, for example, about working with well-known facts or translating a small, simple text. However, when it comes to voluminous tasks that require a thorough approach, the neural network is not the best solution. Let’s try and get why.

SEO and search engines limitations

One of the main drawbacks of using ChatGPT is serious SEO limitations. Many know that the correct use of keywords is required for content to rank in search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, or Bing. They should be used in headlines and be evenly distributed throughout the body of the text.

Do not forget about the correct integration of long-tail keywords. Despite the low frequency and lower popularity, they guarantee a high conversion rate. All these SEO tips are now unavailable to ChatGPT. Therefore, if you need quality SEO text, it is always better to address a specialist or grab some coffee and dive into editing the results of the neural network work.

When talking about search engines and AI-generated content, we cannot ignore the reaction of Google to ChatGPT. On Twitter, Google posted a tweet, stating that generated texts are created primarily for search engine rankings, not for people, which is against their guidance. According to Google Spam Policies, the following content will not be displayed in search results:

  • Text that makes no sense to the reader but contains search keywords
  • Text translated by an automated tool without human review or curation before publishing
  • Text generated through automated processes without regard for quality or user experience
  • Text generated using automated synonymizing, paraphrasing, or obfuscation techniques

After such a harsh statement, Google decided to soften its stance and explained that it still recognizes the power of AI tools. Therefore, in the future, it will probably be loyal to the generated content, if it is created professionally and qualitatively enough.

Nevertheless, we cannot be 100% sure that your neural network-generated text will be approved by the search engine. So, before riding the wave of ChatGPT’s popularity, you’d better consider all aspects: both positive and negative.

Low quality

The tool can help you with a starting point for textual content (generate a topic, suggest a format), but you can’t take full responsibility for writing posts, articles, longreads, etc. Remember, you’re an industry leader, and ChatGPT is not. Content created by ChatGPT can often seem flat, repetitive, or basic, and is certainly different from content created by people for people. Hence, there is a good chance that the content will not be competitive in the marketplace.

Your customers keep up with what your company and you in particular publish in order to get industry information and expert valuable content, not just well-known facts the neural network can offer.

You can still use the neural network to generate quality and cohesive content if you give enough input data. Using a sound and extensive request, as well as prompt tricks, you will get decent text in the end. But remember: it will take time and effort! The question is whether you’re ready to spend all your resources on this, or maybe it will be easier and faster to write text on your own.

By analogy, it can be compared to a hard-working and quick-witted, but not very bright junior. If you explain and describe the result in detail, the work will be done well, but it will take a lot of effort and time.

Inaccuracy

If you are still willing to delegate your texts to ChatGPT, be ready for fact-checking. The neural network is unable to validate sources and critically asses the data found. Therefore, you are likely to face fictitious and implausible facts, and your text is likely to lose practical value. You will be lucky to notice these moments and fix them. But missing them may cost you your reputation.

There are lots of hilarious examples on the Internet. Below are only some of them.

You will also fail to collect links to needed websites with the neural network. ChatGPT is pretty good at generating non-existent links and company names.

By the way, I have also faced unusual responses offered by the neural network. I go to the gym and often try to diversify my training. So, I decided that ChatGPT can simplify this task for me by generating a set of exercises for the required group of muscles. In fact, he did, aside from fantastic exercises like dumbbell one-leg bicep raises.

Prejudice

Being educated on the material from people around the world, it couldn’t but take over existing stereotypes and prejudices. So, your answers or ChatGPT-generated texts may have wordings and phrases that can offend or hurt some of your target audience.

There are examples of discrimination by gender, race, and minority group.

Therefore, before making staff cuts and implementing ChatGPT in your company, think whether it will be rational. Remember, you are responsible for any error made by the neural network. ChatGPT is an instrument you must know how to use and understand that generated content requires proofreading. I do not say that you must ignore it! Use it as you please, but keep in mind the flaws hiding behind the hype.

Conclusion

AI technology impresses with its range of functions and speed. But let’s not forget that the line between fantasy and reality is not so evident for you to be able to fully rely on neural work-generated content.

Maybe in the future, all these problems will be eliminated. But the time has not come yet to assign tasks and important business processes to AI.
